The Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon

2759 North Lipkey Road, North Jackson
4 to 7 p.m. | 330-538-3351

The decades-long tradition of Lenten fish fries at Our Lady of Lebanon Shrine will continue this year, emphasizing high quality ingredients such as haddock and homemade soup.

Chorbishop Anthony Spinosa said the fish fry is especially important to the shrine because it is not a regular parish, so it often relies on events for fundraising. The shrine is an ideal place to spend a Friday evening during Lent—not just for the food, but for the atmosphere and liturgical opportunities it provides. Guests can partake in traditional Maronite liturgical celebrations at 5:30 p.m., such as the Chaplet of the Five Wounds, the Blessing with the Cross and more. Chorbishop Anthony said that many people come early for dinner to participate in the service.

“They can roam through the shrine, they can go into the basilica; many of them will go in to light their candles and to say their prayers, and if the weather is good, [people] like to walk around the grounds as well,” Chorbishop Anthony said. “Even with a lot of people coming for the fish dinner, it still remains rather peaceful.”

St. Maron Maronite Church

The Maronite Center, 1555 South Meridian Road, Youngstown
3 to 7 p.m. | 330-792-7671

After a nearly 30-year run of successful fish fries, St. Maron moved its fish fry into a bigger hall last year to accommodate a rapidly growing attendance for their weekly seafood dinner, with a menu including clams, shrimp scampi, grilled tuna steak and mjadra—a traditional Lebanese dish consisting of rice, lentils and caramelized fried onions.

Father Tony Massad, originally from Sidon, Lebanon, feels that the extra space provided by the Maronite Center creates a welcoming environment where people come not just to help support the church but to enjoy a fun night out with friends, family and the warmth of the St. Maron community.

“[The parishioners] want others to feel, when they come in, that they’re at home. The festival and fish fry [are] fundraisers, but more than anything they’re a time for us to showcase and give a smiling face to those who come, let them know how much we appreciate them being with us and celebrating with us, enjoying the food or the atmosphere.” Proceeds from St. Maron’s fish fry go toward the parish as well as serving the needy of the community, and all are welcome!

The menu features shrimp, premium haddock (fried, baked and Italian-style) with a choice of side: hand-cut fries, homemade haluski, pierogies, mac & cheese, ravioli, coleslaw or applesauce. Drinks and desserts are also included in each meal.

“It is more than a fish fry—it is our community tradition … The people in the Hubbard community are excited,” said Deacon John Bartos. Even so, guests of the fish fry come from a 70-mile radius each week—confirming that you don’t need to belong to the parish to enjoy the fish fry.

St. Pope John XXIII Parish

Mt. Carmel Social Hall | 29 Erie Street, Niles
4 to 7 p.m. | 330-652-5825

After a hiatus, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church (part of St. Pope John XXIII Parish) brought back its communal fish fry dinners last year and had one of its most successful fundraisers in the parish’s history. It hopes to build on that success by moving the annual fish fry to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Social Hall—a new building which opened last July. The 2026 fish fry is the first public event held within its walls, and the parish community is excited to share the space with their friends and neighbors.

Parishioners at St. Pope John XXIII take great pride in the homemade foods they offer at their fish fries. Everything—aside from the mac & cheese—is made by the community. Menu items include standard Lenten fare, such as baked and fried fish and pierogies. But the star of their fish fry menu is their famous cheese puffs (pictured left)—there is a limited quantity, and they are prone to selling out. So make sure you get one early!

“You’re not gonna walk away hungry,” said Dennis Hayda, chairman for the fish fry, with a laugh. “People have commented to me, ‘You don’t need all-you-can-eat because this is all you could eat!’”

St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish
