
Congratulations to Father Stephen Wassie, who retired from active ministry earlier this year, on July 1!
Father Wassie was born in Conneaut, Ohio, to parents Stephen and Ida (Medeiros) Wassie, in 1953. He attended St. Mary School in Conneaut and went onto high school at Saint John School in Ashtabula, where he graduated in 1971. He went on to St. Gregory Seminary, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy, followed by Mt. St. Mary Seminary in Cincinnati, where he earned a Master of Divinity in 1979.
Father Wassie was ordained to the priesthood on December 1, 1979, by Bishop Malone at St. Columba Cathedral, and he immediately served for a short time as chaplain at North Side Hospital in Youngstown. He served as associate pastor at St. Pius X (now St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish) in Warren from 1980 to 1985, followed by St. Aloysius (now Holy Trinity Parish) in East Liverpool from 1985 to 1988, and Immaculate Conception Parish in Ravenna from 1988 to 1993. His first pastorate was at St. Joseph Calasanctius Parish in Jefferson, where he served until 2015 and assumed an additional pastorate at St. Andrew Bobola Parish in Kingsville. Beginning in 2015, Father Wassie served as pastor at St. George Parish in Lisbon, St. Philip Neri Parish in Dungannon and St. John the Evangelist Parish in Summitville—and he retired from these assignments on July 1, 2025. Father Wassie has also served on the diocesan Senate of Priests
