From the Editor: October 2023

“What is the deadline?”

This month, I’d like to address this common question we’ve been receiving at the Echo office—especially because it is going to become a rather important one in the months ahead.

Parishes, Catholic groups and parishioners are always welcome to submit events and story ideas to the Catholic Echo. However, because our magazines go to print about a month before they hit your home, we need to receive all such suggestions rather early so that they can be considered for our content plan.

We can place most events on our online calendar at CatholicEcho.org, regardless of when we receive them. However, if you’d like your event to be considered for the print calendar, which you can see here on page 8, you should email catholicecho@youngstowndiocese.org approximately six weeks before the beginning of the month of the issue it would be published in. For example, let’s say your parish is hosting a bake sale on December 16—that means it would be considered for the December/January issue, which hits homes around December 1. From there, you count back about six weeks—to mid-October—and that’s the deadline.

So, we need to hear about your parish/group’s Christmas events this month. We also (and I realize this is a tough one) will need to know about Lenten events, including fish fries, by mid-December so that they can be considered for our February 2024 issue. You can either use my email below or send us an email at catholicecho@youngstowndiocese.org with event information. We invite all readers to stay up-to-date on upcoming events by consulting both the calendar in the print magazine and the full calendar at catholicecho.org/events/.

Now that this important bit of housekeeping is completed, I’d like to turn your attention to this issue of The Catholic Echo. Our first feature by, Collin Vogt, is about when disaster strikes and parishes must pivot and rebuild. Our second feature, by Pete Sheehan, is about the proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution that would enshrine abortion. Please read it—and the bishop’s column—very carefully so that you understand why the Church is asking you to “vote no on November 7.” It is also our vocations issue, so take a look at some interesting statistics and read about the inaugural Bishop’s Golf Classic. And there’s a lot more besides! We hope you enjoy it all.

Until next month,

Katie Wagner
