Recognizing our jubilarians, retirees and church dedication anniversaries

Catholics across the six counties of the Diocese of Youngstown have a lot to celebrate this year! Let’s start with the people. Our very own Bishop David Bonnar celebrated the fifth year of being a bishop—and being our bishop—in January. Three diocesan priests retired, and we are honoring the jubilees of four priests—three are celebrating 50 years in the priesthood, one is celebrating 40 years. We also have 38 religious sisters marking 25 to 75 years.

For the past year, St. Joan of Arc Parish has been celebrating its 60th anniversary. Parishes celebrating the anniversary of a church building include St. Isidore Parish in Harrisburg, St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Boardman, St. Patrick Parish in Youngstown and St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Vienna. The Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration are also celebrating the anniversary of the dedication of their Santa Clara Monastery in Canton.

FATHER EDWARD BRIENZ, most recently chaplain at diocesan cemeteries, sacramental minister at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Boardman and spiritual director for the Cursillo Movement, has retired from the priesthood after 31 years.

Father William Kraynak, most recently pastor at Immaculate Conception in Ravenna and administrator at St. Patrick and the University Parish Newman Center in Kent—all recently merged to form St. Katharine Drexel Parish—and dean of the Portage County Deanery, has retired from the priesthood after 45 years.

Father Richard Murphy, most recently pastor at Queen of Heaven Parish in McDonald & Mineral Ridge and president at Ursuline High School in Youngstown, has retired from the priesthood after 46 years.

Priest Jubilarians

Father James Daprile, retired diocesan priest and pastor emeritus at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Aurora (Portage County), celebrated 50 years in the priesthood on June 12.

Father Edward Noga, retired diocesan priest and pastor emeritus at St. Patrick Parish in Youngstown (Mahoning County), celebrated 50 years in the priesthood on February 15.

Father John Madden, retired diocesan priest, pastor emeritus at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in Rock Creek (Ashtabula County) and sacramental minister at four Youngstown (Mahoning County) parishes—St. Columba Cathedral, St. Patrick, St. Angela Merici and Our Lady of Mount Carmel/ St. Anthony—celebrated 40 years in the priesthood on June 21.

Father Thomas McCarthy, retired diocesan priest who served as pastor at the Trumbull County parishes of Blessed Sacrament (now St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish) in Warren and St. William in Champion—in addition to service at several other diocesan parishes and schools—celebrated 65 years in the priesthood on August 15.

Parish, church buildings and more Anniversaries

The Sacred Heart of Mary Church community in Harrisburg (Stark County), which is now part of St. Isidore Parish, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. The first Masses of this community were celebrated in 1833 by French settlers to the Harrisburg area. The church building was dedicated in 1876, and though it was severely damaged by wind in 1956, it was restored the same year. Learn more at www.CatholicEcho.org.

The St. Charles Church community in Boardman (Mahoning County), which is now part of St. Catherine of Sienna Parish, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The community’s first Mass was in the Boardman town hall on November 10, 1926. Learn more at www.CatholicEcho.org.

St. Patrick Parish in Youngstown (Mahoning County) is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its church, which was dedicated June 8, 1926. The parish was established by Irish settlers in Youngstown in 1911, and they originally attended Mass in St. Columba Church Hall before acquiring property of their own. The Sancta Clara Monastery in Canton (Stark County), which is home to the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration, was dedicated 80 years ago by Bishop James McFadden on October 1, 1946. The founding members were Mothers Mary Clare (Abbess) and Mary Luka (Vicar) and Sisters Mary Joanne, Mary of the Cross, Mary Angelica and Mary Juliana serving as extern—and their order has been adoring the Lord (and growing) ever since. St. Joan of Arc Parish in Streetsboro (Portage County) celebrated its 60th year on May 30. The parish was established by Bishop Emmett Walsh on June 18, 1965, and parishioners celebrated Mass in the local high school cafeteria until the parish hall was finished in 1968. St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Vienna (Trumbull County) is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the dedication of its church building on July 3, 2016. St. Thomas consists of the historical communities of St. Bernadette and St. Vincent dePaul—the two churches voted to build a new worship site when they were merged.
