The Good News: April 2025

Headshot of Jacque Mumford

WELCOME, JACQUE!

Dr. Jacque Mumford, former professor of education at Walsh University and principal at St. Paul School in Salem, has been named the director of continuous improvement for the diocesan Office of Catholic Schools. She will begin her new role this July, and her work will focus on how to improve academic outcomes for all students. Mumford will also help direct individual school improvement plans and work with the Ohio Catholic School Accrediting Association to ensure that the Diocese of Youngstown’s Catholic schools are the most sought-after educational options in our six-county region.

SEMINARIAN SUPPORT

On Good Shepherd Sunday, May 11, all parishes in the diocese will be taking a second collection to support our diocesan seminarians. They need your support for theological training and educational expenses. Visit www.doy.org/vocations/seminarians/ for more information or to donate.

You can also support diocesan seminarians by sponsoring or participating in the annual Bishop’s Golf Classic on Monday, June 30, at The Lake Club on Paulin Road in Youngstown. Visit www.doy.org/golf to learn more about tickets and sponsorship opportunities.

SECOND CHANCE MONTH

April has been declared “Second Chance Month,” a month-long recognition of the critical work of the communities, agencies and individuals who assist formerly incarcerated citizens and help them to reintegrate into society after they have been released. Second Chance Month is also an opportunity to raise awareness of the many difficulties those who are seeking a second chance at life face and to learn what we as members of the community can do to help.

Visit www.drc.ohio.gov to find a local Citizens’ Circle or your local Reentry Coalition and become involved directly in supporting second chances. The diocese also provides ministry opportunities to individuals both in and out of the system. To learn more about volunteering for diocesan Prison and Jail Ministry, visit the website for the Office of Peace and Justice for Catholic Charities at www.ccdoy.org.

CRS RICE BOWL

Fifty years ago, Catholics in Allentown, Pennsylvania, organized to bring help to families facing famine in Africa. That help came in the form of a small cardboard box, marking the beginning of “Operation Rice Bowl.” Today, as we celebrate CRS Rice Bowl’s 50th anniversary, the program is a tradition for millions of Catholics in the United States who continue to answer the Gospel call, supporting families experiencing hunger around the world.

Your donation to CRS Rice Bowl helps provide lifesaving support to more than 200 million people in more than 120 countries. But did you know your support also helps your local diocese? Twenty-five percent of every donation stays in your community to fight hunger and poverty, while 75 percent supports Catholic Relief Services programming around the world. EAGLE OF THE CROSS RECIPIENTS

The Office of Youth and Young Adult Accompaniment presented Eagle of the Cross Awards to teens in the six counties of the Diocese of Youngstown who model Christian discipleship and exemplify the qualities of moral integrity, prayer, good works and Christian leadership in their school and parish communities. The awards will be presented in a ceremony on April 28. See photos from the ceremony online at www.catholicecho.org.
