The Good News: September 2024

As part of Bishop Bonnar’s commitment to the newly restored Office of Rural Life and Ministry, the diocese has offered Mass at five fairs this summer, to support Catholic families who participate in the fairs and are unable to leave fairgrounds. Above, Bishop Bonnar celebrated Mass at the Columbiana County Fair in Lisbon on August 4. Other Masses were held at the Ashtabula County Fair (August 11) and the Portage County Fair (August 25), and Masses will also be held on September 1 at both the Canfield Fair in Mahoning County and the Stark County Fair. DIOCESAN MEDIA DAY

In honor of the September 29 Feast of the Archangels, who proclaim God’s messages to the world, we are celebrating Catholics who serve in media and communications in the Diocese of Youngstown. In addition to diocesan communications and Catholic Echo staff, we especially want to thank the communicators in our parishes, who edit bulletins, maintain websites, manage social media and more. Visit doy.org to find resources and prayers for communicators. You can also support diocesan media today by sending your spiritual questions, story ideas and recipes.

WORLD DAY FOR GRANDPARENTS AND THE ELDERLY

In 2021, Pope Francis established the celebration of World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly on the fourth Sunday of July, near the liturgical memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has approved the transfer of this celebration to the first weekend after Labor Day in September (this year, September 7 & 8) to coincide with National Grandparents Day, which many local communities, schools and parishes have celebrated for some time. Check your parish bulletin to learn what your parish has planned and go to the diocesan website for prayers and other resources.

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY

“Lord, when did we see you hungry?” is the theme for 2024 Catechetical Sunday, observed on September 15. All parishes in the United States will recognize the Ministry of the Word and those who have dedicated themselves to passing on the faith. Some parishes may mark this event with a commissioning of catechists—including catechists of children in parish faith formation and the school and facilitators of OCIA, Bible studies and other small faith-sharing groups—during the Sunday liturgies. Parishes may also have a blessing for parents, since they are the first catechists of their children. Check your parish’s bulletin for more details.
