Whether it’s providing information, assisting with basic needs or offering educational programs, helping people rise from poverty into their own self-sufficiency has always been at the heart of Catholic Charities of Ashtabula County.
St. Joseph Warren Hospital—originally “Riverside Hospital,” was founded by Dr. Chester Waller in 1924, who intended to entrust it to the care of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary.
he 80th anniversary of the Society of St. Paul in Canfield this year seems a fitting time to highlight the community’s decades-long commitment to spreading the Gospel via multimedia—a cherished gift it has given to the people of the Youngstown Diocese and beyond.
The origins of St. Joseph Calasanctius Parish can be traced back to the 1850s. At the time, Catholicism was still largely persecuted in America, but the Catholic community in Jefferson requested a Mass from Bishop Joshua Young of Erie, Pennsylvania.
This year, Immaculate Conception Parish in Ravenna is celebrating its 170th anniversary. The parish can trace its history back to 1853, when a group of eight Catholic railroad workers living in Earlville, which is known today as Twin Lakes, began worshipping together.
This year, the Cursillo Movement is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its first retreat held in the Diocese of Youngstown.
n January 1954, the newly-minted Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish celebrated its first Mass as a community in the auditorium of Fitch High School, led by Monsignor Andrew Prokop.
“I have only the best memories,” he said.
“There were more pluses than minuses,” he said.
