“Pedal Pushing Pupils” from Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Youngstown took a two-hour break from school to get on their bikes and explore Mill Creek Park in 1971. Early in the 1970s, Catholic schools began earnestly to coordinate physical education so that exercises increased in complexity as a child progressed from grade to grade. With this bike hike, these eighth-graders experienced learning in physical education, safety, nature and faith. The adventure was the idea of the school principal, Ursuline Sister Paulette Petrosky, who led by example and accompanied the students on the trails. A truck hauled the bicycles, while cars transported the students to the park. Photo from the Catholic Exponent, October 22, 1971
