Semana Santa en la Parroquia de Santo Domingo
St. Dominic Parish in Youngstown is served by the Dominican friars of the Province of St. Joseph. Dedicated in 1957, St. Dominic Church is a large modern Romanesque structure located at 77 East Lucius Avenue in Youngstown. St. Dominic Parish celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023 and today is the spiritual home of many Youngstown-area Catholics, including members of the local Hispanic community.
Below is a reflection from Father Frassati Davis, O.P., who serves at St. Dominic Parish and is involved in Hispanic Ministry throughout the diocese. In it, he explains many of the traditions that are unique to the parish throughout Holy Week, in both English and Spanish.
Contemplating the paschal mystery is more than a long walk—it is a pilgrimage that takes a lifetime of prayer and a merciful amount of perseverance. God allows our shortcomings so that we may embrace the need for a Divine Savior. The passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ during Holy Week gives the Christian people a lasting reminder that we are called to walk as a pilgrim people towards the promise of eternity.
Contemplar el misterio pascual es más que una larga caminata; es una peregrinación que requiere un hábito de oración. Dios nos da una cantidad de misericordia al permitir nuestras deficiencias para que podamos abrazar la necesidad de un Salvador Divino. Palm Sunday
The holiest of weeks began with a procession with blessed palms. Anointed with holy water and kissed with sweet incense, the people of God waited for Jesus to enter into Jerusalem with a prayer that foreshadows the wood of the cross.
The royal banners forward go,
The cross shines forth in mystic glow;
Where he, by whom our flesh was made,
In that same flesh, our ransom paid.
Palm Sunday is our wake-up call to offer due worship, and to welcome the King who would pay our debt to sin.
Domingo de Ramos
La semana más santa comenzó con una procesión con palmas benditas. Ungidas con agua bendita y besadas con el olor dulce del incienso, el pueblo de Dios esperaba a Jesús en su entrada de Jerusalén. La siguiente canción revela la madera de la cruz en medio del gozo:
Las banderas del rey se enarbolan,
Resplandece el misterio de la cruz,
En la cual la vida padeció muerte,
Y con la muerte nos dio vida.
El Domingo de Ramos es nuestra llamada para dar la bienvenida al Rey que pagaría nuestra deuda por el pecado.
Spy Wednesday
Days pass and the final stretch of Lenten penance and preparation casts a shadow on the significant moment of Biblical betrayal. John’s Gospel recounts that, for thirty pieces of silver, Judas “looked for an opportunity to hand him over.”
They did not know, as we do now,
that glorious is your crown;
that thorns would flower upon your brow,
your sorrows heal our own.
In an effort to counter the embarrassment of religious treason, the faithful at St. Dominic Parish lined up for morning confessions. A wedding ceremony capped the forty days of a long Lent, as one couple exchanged their vows in order to receive the remainder of their sacramental graces just a few days later.
Miércoles Santo
Los días pasan y el tramo final de penitencia y preparación de Cuaresma arroja una sombra sobre el momento de traición. El Evangelio de Juan relata que, por treinta monedas de plata, Judas “buscaba una oportunidad para entregarlo”.
Ellos no sabían, como sabemos ahora,
que gloriosa es tu corona;
que las espinas florecerían sobre tu frente,
tus dolores sanarían los nuestros.
En un esfuerzo de contrarrestar la vergüenza de la traición religiosa, los fieles de la Parroquia Santo Domingo hicieron fila detrás del confesionario. Holy Thursday
Before the peal of the gloria bells at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, volunteers cleaned the sanctuary of the church. Shrubs and roses adorned the altar of repose, an eden that would keep the silent watch of night.
On the night of that Last Supper,
seated with His chosen band,
He the Paschal victim eating,
first fulfills the Law’s command;
then as Food to His Apostles
gives Himself with His own hand.
The Institution of the Priesthood is also the day in which “our lord Jesus Christ handed on the mysteries of His Body and Blood for His disciples to celebrate.” The washing of feet provided a servile subtext to the clapping sound of the crotalus at the elevation during the consecration. The sacrifice of Christ’s body was translated to the altar of repose, which created a tension of inclusion: if we love Him, we are included as His disciples. If we love Him, we are included to offer sacrifice. Keeping watch, the bilingual congregation chanted the Pange Lingua as Our Lord took leave of His sanctuary, awaiting the consequence of His love for us.
Jueves Santo
Antes del toque de las campanas gloriosas en la Misa de la Cena del Señor, los voluntarios limpiaron el espacio sagrado del santuario del templo. Palmas y varias flores adornaron el altar de reposo, un Edén que guardaría la vigilia misteriosa de la noche.
En la cena postrimera
Hasta el fin llevó su amor,
Observando todo el rito
Que la Ley se prescribió.
Hizo su cuerpo comida
Y a los doce se entregó.
La Institución del Sacerdocio es también el día en que “nuestro Señor Jesucristo transmitió los misterios de Su Cuerpo y Sangre para que sus discípulos los celebraran”. El lavado de pies modeló un subtexto servil al sonido de los martillazos en la elevación de la hostia en la consagración. El sacrificio del cuerpo de Cristo se traslada en el altar de reposo, creando una tensión de inclusión: si lo amamos a Él, somos incluidos como sus discípulos. Si lo amamos a Él, estamos incluidos para ofrecer sacrificio. Manteniendo la vigilia, la congregación bilingüe cantó el Pange Lingua mientras El Salvador del Mundo se despedía de su santuario, esperando las consecuencias de su amor por nosotros.
Good Friday
By his cross, He has redeemed the world. And by the veneration of His cross, He invites us as individuals to seek redemption.
Is there one who would not weep,
Whelmed in miseries so deep,
Christ’s dear Mother to behold?
It is finished, yet it is only the beginning. The Good Friday liturgy makes a note that on this day, the Church does not celebrate the Sacraments at all, except for Penance and the Anointing of the Sick. We are in need of healing, and our Virgin Mother shows us how to stay close to the Son of God in the greatest moments of misery.
A single block radius of Cottage Grove provided an overgrown stage to remember the moment of misery. Parishioners and members of Movimiento Juan XXIII led a prayerful Live Stations of the Cross, shedding light on the darkness of a humanity seeking redemption.
Viernes Santo
Por su santa cruz, Él ha redimido al mundo. Y por la veneración de la cruz, nos invita a buscar la redención como amados individuos.
Y ¿cuál hombre no llorara
Y a la Madre contemplara
De Cristo en tanto dolor?
Está consumado, pero es solo el comienzo. La liturgia del Viernes Santo señala que durante este día en particular, la Iglesia no celebra los Sacramentos en absoluto, excepto la Penitencia y la Unción de los Enfermos. Necesitamos sanación, y nuestra Virgen Madre nos muestra cómo quedarnos cerca del Hijo de Dios en los momentos de mayor miseria. Feligreses y miembros del Movimiento Juan XXIII dirigieron un Vía Crucis en vivo lleno de oración, trayendo luz sobre la oscuridad de una humanidad en busca de redención.
Holy Saturday
Total darkness transformed into the bright light of resurrection at the liturgy of the Easter Vigil. Catechumens and candidates gathered around the Easter fire, their hearts aflame with the desire for the grace of the sacraments.
Hail, great day, in all time most worthy of veneration,
for today God conquered Hell
while holding his place in heaven.
The tour through biblical salvation history lends a hand to the Alleluia chorus, ringing in the ultimate sign of the conquering of hell—the initiation of new Christians. Our pilgrimage through the Paschal mystery finds its evidence in the accomplishment of welcoming more Catholics into the Body of Christ. A body that has suffered, has died, and has truly risen.
When we take time to reflect on the grace of salvation, we remove the obstacles that inhibit our awareness of God’s judgment and mercy. This is our purpose: to love and desire the things of God and to invite the wanderers to the stable love of the Divine Comforter. This is our mission: so that all may be one.

Sábado Santo
La oscuridad total se transformó en la luminosidad de la resurrección en la liturgia de la Vigilia Pascual. Catecúmenos y candidatos se reunieron alrededor del fuego pascual, con sus corazones abiertos al deseo de la gracia de los sacramentos.
Salva, día de fiesta, día de veneración eterna,
En el cual Dios vence al infierno

Este es el asunto de nuestra fe: amar y desear las cosas de Dios e invitar a los pobres de espíritu al amor estable del Consolador Divino. Esta es nuestra misión: para que todos sean uno.
