Saint Brendan is the patron saint of boaters, divers, mariners, travelers, whales and the U.S. Navy. In the diocese, St. Brendan Parish on the west side of Youngstown bears his name.

In February 1923, a plot of land was purchased—the first on Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown—as the future site of St. Brendan Parish.

St. Matthias Church, Youngstown, celebrates 50th anniversary of church building
Nearly 110 years ago, St. Matthias, now part of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, was established on the southeast side of Youngstown.
