From the Archives: Vocations in 1960

Father Francis Snock assistant pastor of then St. Matthias Parish views vocation posters offered by the 9th Graders of the parishes Junior High School.

In an earlier generation, vocation appeals were more “analog” than today, but just as earnest and necessary. This 1960 Catholic Exponent shows Father Frances Snock, assistant pastor at Saint Matthias in Youngstown, viewing the display put together by ninth graders at the parish junior high school. They used posters, publications, articles and books in the school lobby to draw interest in religious life. The girls, left to right, are Doris Pechurow, Carole Sebest and Elaine Pavlich. In 1960, there were more than 600 sisters from 16 different religious communities serving in the diocese in parishes, schools, hospitals and homes for the aged. It was a period marking a height in numbers of young women answering the call to vowed religious life
