Dedication and Foreword

Dedication

“An undertaking of love.”

This phrase was used by Bishop James McFadden over eighty years ago in his dedication of his 1951 book, The March of the Eucharist, to characterize the efforts of all those involved with the establishment of the Diocese of Youngstown in 1943 “under the exigencies of a great global war.” He wrote, “Love begets love and the arduous burdens that had to be confronted were greatly lightened through the generosity, loyal and sincere co-operation of the members of the new diocese. No task seemed too large; no problem too difficult.” Throughout these many years, that same love for Christ and His Church continues to emanate from the hearts of the clergy, religious and faithful of this diocese, empowering us to be the Church in this portion of the Lord’s vineyard. I dedicate this new edition of The March of the Eucharist to every human heart—living and deceased—that has continued this holy march of bringing Christ to the world. May this “undertaking of love,” impelled by God in the human heart, continue throughout our six counties and beyond. Together, let us march forward, practicing the virtues of faith, hope and love. And let us pray, “That all may be one.”

Foreword

In the foreword for the original The March of the Eucharist, Bishop James McFadden wrote, “Devotion to Christ the King in the Eucharist is the source and inspiration of all Catholic Action. The Church has no greater power to strengthen those souls who wish to devote their lives to the service of Christ, than the Most Blessed Sacrament.” The Holy Eucharist remains for us a power, presence and peace, as we continue our earthly journey on the way to heaven. This new edition of The March of the Eucharist coincides with the 100th anniversary of the establishment by Pope Pius XI of the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe. In a world of many powers and influences, we behold our Savior as our King. We also thank Almighty God for the gift of faith that helps us on our journey. As Bishop McFadden wrote, “Our Catholic Faith and our love of the Blessed Sacrament are the greatest of all joys on this earth. We thank God for it all the days of our lives and pray that devotion and reverence to Christ the King in the Eucharist may grow in us and urge us on in all that is good, that we may await with confidence the final union with Him in Heaven Whose Eucharistic presence we worship on earth.” As we reflect upon the many parish communities that comprise our diocese, may we boldly and joyfully continue the march of the Eucharist!
