Father Thomas McCarthy- 63rd Jubilee

Father Thomas McCarthy was ordained for the Youngstown Diocese August 15, 1961, by Bishop Emmet Walsh in St. Columba Cathedral. A Warren native, he attended St. Mary School and St. Mary High School. He progressed to St. Gregory Seminary, Cincinnati, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He advanced to Mount St. Mary of the West Seminary, also in Cincinnati.

Following ordination, Father McCarthy’s first assignment was as associate pastor at St. Edward Parish in Youngstown in June 1962. He was appointed diocesan director of vocations in 1966. Father McCarthy also attended the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana, for additional graduate studies in educational administration.

From 1967 to 1969, he served as assistant diocesan chancellor. From 1969 to 1971, he was associate superintendent of diocesan schools. Father McCarthy was appointed principal of Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown 1971 but resigned for health reasons. In 1972, he was named associate pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Austintown. In 1973, Father McCarthy was appointed to his first pastorate, St. William Parish in Champion. He was named pastor of St. Michael Parish in Canfield in 1977, remaining there until 1983. In 1979, he assumed the additional responsibility of diocesan priest personnel director—remaining in the capacity until 1985. In 1983, he was named pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Warren (now St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish), serving until 1991. Father McCarthy was elected president of the National Federation of Priests Councils in Chicago in 1991, serving there until 1994. In September 1994, he was appointed pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Mantua, remaining there until 2003. In 2000, he assumed the additional duty of personnel advisor for the diocesan Office of Clergy and Religious Services. Father McCarthy in July 2003 was given the added duty of Bishop’s Delegate for Retired Priests. In 2009, Father McCarthy was appointed pro-tem administrator of Holy Trinity Parish in East Liverpool. He retired in November 2010. Since then, he has been offering Masses at Villa Maria Teresa in Hubbard and occasionally at the Ursuline Center in Canfield.
