This year marks jubilees for 12 vowed religious of the Diocese of Youngstown. They were honored at a Lenten Mass celebrated by Bishop David J. Bonnar at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Canton on March 25.
The history of The Basilica of St. John The Baptist is woven into the history of Canton, Stark County. Established in 1823, it is the second-oldest parish in the Diocese of Youngstown.

The story of St. Mary and St. Joseph truly begins in 1922, when a committee of Newton Falls’ Catholic residents requested spiritual consideration.
The first Masses were held on Springfield Local Board of Education property in New Middletown on July 6, 1952, while the parish planned for the building of its church.
