These cheerful-looking women of the former St. Stanislaus Parish in Youngstown are seen here working with Father John Grabowski—assistant pastor of the parish from 1930, and then pastor from 1938 to 1960—to live out their baptismal call. They likely wouldn’t have identified it that way, but from our perspective we see their faith and love flowing through their hands and hearts.
They regularly gathered garments in the 1940s to repair and ship to the people of Poland who were suffering the debilitating effects of World War II and its aftermath. Father Grabowski organized the Polish Relief Committee and was the diocesan director for displaced persons. He and parishioners,
plus area business leaders, hosted and resettled people displaced by the war.
