God’s faithfulness has sustained Sister Carolyn Marshall for 65 years as she has lived out the call to religious life. Responding to the call as a senior in college, she soon began a 47-year commitment to the education of young women as a high school teacher, resident director at Villa Maria High School, and principal and president of Magnificat High School. The richness and realities of community life were a sustaining force through those years as God’s grace is often realized through the action of others. This was even more apparent during Sister Carolyn’s eight years in congregational leadership. God’s faithfulness to the Humility of Mary Community is constant and enduring.
The gift of religious life was reinforced as she spent her last seven years of active ministry working with other religious communities as a consultant for the National Religious Retirement Office. Sister Carolyn, a native of Mansfield, Ohio, joined the Sisters of Notre Dame in Cleveland in 1958, taking the name Sister Mary Laurel. Responding to Vatican II’s call for the renewal of religious life, she transferred the Sisters of the Humility of Mary in 1970. She continues to serve the community in various capacities while residing at the Villa.
