Obituary: Sister Julia Makowski

Benedictine Sister Julia Makowski, 97, died as she lived, peacefully, and aware of God’s presence, on June 20, 2023.

Sister Julia (better known as Julie to her friends and family) was born in 1926 and grew up in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. She was the eighth of nine children born to John and Catherine Makowski.

In 1948 Julie entered the Benedictine community, as did her biological sister, Helen. When they received the habit, Julia became Sister Mary Daniel and Helen became Sister Christine (deceased in 2020). Sister Mary Daniel returned to her baptismal name in 1969.

One of Sister Julie’s favorite scripture quotes is from Micah, “Act justly, love tenderly, walk humbly with your God.” She lived that scripture and touched countless people over the years in her various ministries.

Sister Julie taught in Pittsburgh at St. Boniface, St. Teresa of Avila and St. Mary. She served many years as principal and teacher at St. Benedict School in Canton, Ohio.

Sister was Novice Directress and Sub-Prioress for the Benedictine community and was Secretary/Receptionist/Bookkeeper at Incarnation of the Lord Parish.

Everyone who met Sister Julie felt blessed by her kindness, compassion and joyful spirit.

Sister Julie is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A celebration of Sister Julie’s life was held at the monastery on Friday, June 30. The funeral liturgy was Saturday, July 1. Sister Julie’s nephew, Monsignor Michael Begolly, was the Presider at her funeral liturgy.

When you feast on your next donut, make it a jelly donut, Sister Julie’s favorite … she’ll be smiling on you from heaven!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Benedictine Sisters, 3526 Bakerstown Rd. Bakerstown, PA  15007.
