Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Peace be with you! As Catholics, we are committed to protecting the sanctity of human life no matter the circumstances or stage of development. We live this out by, among other things, accompanying the poor and needy, refugees and immigrants, prisoners on death row, young mothers, and children.
In Ohio, the dignity of life in its earliest stages is threatened by groups proposing an amendment to Ohio’s Constitution for the November 2023 ballot that would enshrine and expand abortion at the expense of protections for preborn children and women. The Church must not be silent and cannot remain on the sidelines when confronted with such a clear threat to human life. This proposal demands a response, and we strongly encourage Catholics and all people of good will in Ohio to work against including the proposed amendment for the November ballot and, if it appears on the ballot, vote against the amendment to prevent countless deaths of preborn, innocent children.
Our Holy Father Pope Francis reminds us that “Our defense of the innocent unborn … needs to be clear, firm and passionate, for at stake is the dignity of a human life, which is always sacred and demands love for each person, regardless of his or her stage of development” (Gaudete et Exsultate, no. 101). Our commitment to protecting and promoting life includes providing resources and accompanying women during and after pregnancy through our numerous social service agencies, schools, and parishes. This commitment also includes rejecting abortion expansion, which only perpetuates a throwaway culture that does not value human life.
The Catholic Conference of Ohio will be collaborating with statewide organizations, and diocesan respect life offices will be seeking volunteers to help coordinate a campaign at every parish. More information and materials will become available as we mobilize to oppose the proposed amendment on the November 2023 ballot.
We, the Catholic Bishops of Ohio, stand with you, our faithful, in our commitment in the name of the Lord of Life, to each human person from conception to natural death. Let us unite in fasting and offering this prayer:
God our loving Father, grant wisdom to those who govern us, compassion and courage to those who work to defend human life, and safety and care to every human being. For you alone who formed us in our mothers’ wombs, and who call us home to heaven, are God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Estimados hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
¡La paz esté con ustedes! Como católicos, estamos comprometidos a proteger la santidad de la vida
humana en cualquier circunstancia y etapa de desarrollo. Vivimos esto a través de, entre otras
cosas, acompañar al pobre y necesitado, refugiados e inmigrantes, prisioneros sentenciados a pena
de muerte, madres jóvenes y niños.
En Ohio, la dignidad de la vida en sus primeras etapas está amenazada por grupos que proponen
una enmienda a la Constitución de Ohio en las próximas elecciones en noviembre 2023, la cual
podría afianzar y expandir el aborto a costa de la protección de los niños no nacidos y las mujeres.
La Iglesia no debe mantenerse en silencio y no puede permanecer ajena a confrontar está clara
amenaza a la vida humana. Esta propuesta demanda una respuesta, y nosotros pedimos
encarecidamente a los católicos y a todas las personas de buena voluntad en Ohio, para que
trabajen en contra de la propuesta de enmienda en las próximas elecciones, y si apareciera en la
boleta, voten en contra de la enmienda para prevenir innumerables muertes de inocentes niños
aún no nacidos.
Nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco, nos recuerda que “La defensa del inocente que no ha
nacido, por ejemplo, debe ser clara, firme y apasionada, porque allí está en juego la dignidad de la
vida humana, siempre sagrada, y lo exige el amor a cada persona más allá de su desarrollo”
(Gaudete et Exultate, No. 101). Nuestro compromiso para proteger y promover la vida, incluye
proveer recursos y acompañar a las mujeres durante y después del embarazo a través de nuestras
numerosas agencias de servicio social, escuelas y parroquias. Este compromiso también incluye
total rechazo a la expansión del aborto, el cual solo perpetúa la cultura de descarte que no valora la
vida humana.
La Conferencia Católica de Ohio estará en constante colaboración con organizaciones en todo el
estado, además las oficinas diocesanas de respeto por la vida estarán buscando voluntarios para
ayudar a coordinar las campañas en cada parroquia. Más información, así como materiales, estarán
disponibles mientras nos movilizamos para rechazar la propuesta de enmienda en las elecciones de
noviembre de este año.
Nosotros, los obispos católicos de Ohio, estamos con ustedes, nuestros fieles, en nuestro
compromiso en el nombre del Señor de la vida, con cada vida humana desde la concepción hasta la
muerte natural. Unámonos en ayuno y ofrezcamos esta oración:
Dios Padre amoroso, otorga sabiduría a aquellos que nos gobiernan, compasión y coraje a aquellos que
trabajan para defender la vida humana, y seguridad y cuidado a cada ser humano. Tú que nos formaste en el vientre de nuestras madres y que nos llamas a la casa celestial, eres Dios, ahora y por siempre. Amén.
