Almost 200 people attended the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass held in St. Columba Cathedral on December 12, followed by a banquet at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Basilica hall.
The Mass was said entirely in Spanish, including the homily, which Bishop David J. Bonnar delivered. Many attendees wore brightly-colored traditional garb, and a mariachi band provided music for both events.
The feast celebrates Our Lady of Guadalupe as the Mother of God and the mother of all humanity and marks the moment when she appeared on a hill of Tepeyac in Mexico in 1531. An indigenous peasant, Juan Diego, saw her glowing figure, and she identified herself to him, asking that he build a shrine to her on that spot.
In a blessing signaling the start of the banquet, Bishop Bonnar remarked in English that the gathering “makes us stronger and makes us full-hearted when Jesus comes” at Christmastime.
Zayda Colon of Youngstown, who said she immigrated from Puerto Rico in 2017, explained that the feast signals “something very important to my faith.” Our Lady of Guadalupe, she stated simply, “is my mother.”
Father Fritz Schluter, who serves as associate pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Canton, and Holy Family Parish in Navarre and Brewster said it is his pleasure to be involved in diocesan Hispanic ministry and to “share in the riches of the Latino culture with its music, images and statues.”
He went on to say what a “joy it is to have the responsibility of serving” a Catholic community with such vibrancy.
Dancers included the Danza Azteca Guadalupano, the Ursuline High School Dancers and Mariana Bishara, also of Ursuline. Grupo de Jovenes de St. Francis of Assisi Church in Canton also participated.
Rosalie Crawford of Lowellville and John Vigliotti, also of Lowellville, attended the event in support of their daughter Luciana Vigliotti, who is active in the Spanish Club at Ursuline. “We are supporting [the Ursuline students] and the Hispanic Community.”
Monsignor Robert Siffrin is St. Columba rector, and Martha Reed, OSU, is pastoral minister. The organizing committee consisted of Isabel Leon, Antelmo Alarcon, Frank Nolasco, Carlos Ramirez, Father Brian Smith and Cristina Hernandez.

Misa de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Celebrada en la Catedral San Columba
Cerca de 200 personas asistieron a la Misa de la Festividad de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe que se llevó a cabo en la Catedral San Columba el 12 de diciembre, seguida por una recepción en el salón social de la Basílica de Monte Carmelo.
La Misa fue celebrada totalmente en español, incluída la homilía, entregada por el Obispo David J. Bonnar. Muchos asistentes llevaban coloridos trajes tradicionales, y una banda mariachi tocó en ambos eventos.
La festividad celebra a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe como la Madre de Dios y la madre de toda la humanidad y marca el momento cuando ella aparece en el monte de Tepeyac en México en 1531.
