It is Catholic Charities Awareness Month across the Diocese of Youngstown. All are welcome to contact Catholic Charities in their time of need—not just Catholics—and the information that has been provided here can be used by any person located in the six counties of the diocese.

Catholic Charities Diocese of Youngstown 

Located in diocesan offices, Catholic Charities Diocese of Youngstown provides administrative services to all three affiliate agencies detailed below. The organization also provides:

Services:

Immigration Legal Services: Through a partnership with Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland, the organization offers low-cost immigration assistance for applications filed with U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, representation in Immigration Court and more.

The Office of Peace and Justice: This office promotes the themes of Catholic social teaching, particularly the dignity of the human person, through education, advocacy and prayer.

First Step to Service: This service-learning opportunity for students serves the needs of others as Jesus would.

Community Resource Guide: While Catholic Charities offers a range of services, it often relies on partners in the community to assist with additional services to meet the needs of its clients. The Community Resource Guide is for those “helpers” in the community who seek resources for those in need. The guide lists the services Catholic Charities provides, as well as the services that other local organizations offer.

Catholic Charities Regional Agency 

Serving Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull Counties

Services:

Adoption and Foster Care Information and Referral: The agency closed its Adoption and Foster Care Program in 2016, but it maintains adoption files and resources for those seeking to adopt or foster.

Basic Needs Assistance: This is a specific program for individuals and families to provide financial assistance in crises. Those seeking help with rent, utilities, food, prescriptions, toiletries, cleaning supplies, diapers, formula, etc. are welcome to contact agencies by county to make an appointment.

Housing Counseling: These services include foreclosure/ default counseling, pre-purchase counseling for prospective owners, downpayment assistance, access to HUD certified counselors, access to the City of Youngstown’s At Home Program and more. 

Ex-Offender/ Prison Re-entry / Linkage Services: People leaving the State Correctional System or the County Jail or Community Corrections Association in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties are eligible for the program. Specific concerns are for employment, housing and linkage to treatment and other community resources.

Financial Education: Individual one-on-one and group sessions are available to provide education on budgeting, credit, credit reporting, scams, predatory lending and the importance of establishing a savings plan.

First Step / Pregnancy Support Services: For any woman experiencing pregnancy and their significant others, this program offers supportive case management and limited emergency financial assistance and connects parents to community resources, baby supplies and—if requested—information on adoption.

Homeless Outreach & Rapid Rehousing: This program includes limited outreach, assessment of needs and linkage with resources for shelter, housing and related needs.

SOAR Project / Benefit Bank: The agency assists with an expedited program for applications to Social Security Disability or SSI, prioritizing those who are at risk of homelessness with a mental health disability.

Senior Support Services: Provides social services, case management, advocacy, transportation and resource networking on behalf of adults, age 60 and over.

Information & Referral: Staff and associates provide clients with other resources available within the community.

Columbiana County:  Located at 115 East Washington Street, Lisbon, OH 44432. Call 330-420-0845. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  

Mahoning County: Located at 319 West Rayen Avenue, Youngstown, OH 44502. Call 330-744-3320. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

Trumbull County: Located at 185 Laird Avenue NE, Warren, OH 44483. Call 330-393-4254. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

Location-Specific Services:

Columbiana County- Christina House Domestic Violence Program: A domestic violence shelter for women and children in Columbiana County. Services for male victims are available. The program offers crisis intervention, temporary shelter, a victim’s advocate, case management and emotional support. The victim’s advocate works closely with the Prosecutor’s office for assistance with protection orders. Call the 24-hour crisis line at 330-420-0036.

Columbiana County- Senior Center: Provides on-site and home delivered meals in the immediate East Liverpool/ Wellsville/ Calcutta area, socialization opportunities, telephone reassurance and assistance with supportive services and basic needs. The center, at times, provides a free community meal and special events for the community. Located at 600 East 4th Street, East Liverpool, OH 43920. Call 330-385-7829. Hours are Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. 

Mahoning County Voice of Hope Shelter:  This shelter is for people not able to access the existing emergency shelter in Mahoning County, helping households with children and providing temporary emergency shelter for those experiencing homelessness. It is located at 2124 Glenwood Avenue, Youngstown, OH 44511. Call 234-228-9761.

Catholic Charities of Ashtabula County

Services:

Basic Needs Assistance: These services cover a wide range of needs, including utility assistance, food assistance, baby needs, the HALO Christmas program for individuals and families and more. 

Housing/Homelessness Assistance: These services include foreclosure/ default counseling, pre-purchase counseling for prospective owners, downpayment assistance, access to HUD certified counselors and homeless outreach.

Educational Programming: Programs include financial literacy and budget counseling, the Opening Doors parent leadership session and more. 

Guardianship & Representative Payeeship Services: The Guardianship program utilizes agency staff and community volunteers to serve as “Guardians of Person” to Ashtabula County residents who are over the age of 18, indigent and lack available, appropriate family to fill this role. The Representative Payeeship Program provides casework and money management for individuals with disabilities who cannot manage their own finances.

Catholic Charities Serving Portage and Stark Counties

Services:

Basic Needs Assistance: These services cover a wide range of needs, including utility assistance, food assistance, baby needs and more for individuals and families.

First Step Family Support: Provides assistance to low-income pregnant women and families with young children in obtaining infant supplies. Other First Step services include toilet training kits, facilitation of the Cribs for Kids program, Family Support Services and the Stark County Baby Boutique. This program is partnered with the Heart of Ohio Diaper Bank and Project MKC. 

Furniture Program: In partnership with Habitat for Humanity Restore, this program provides furniture to people with an emergency need, such as exiting a homeless or domestic violence shelter or recovering from a home disaster such as a house fire.

Senior Services: Provides adults 65 and over with basic needs assistance, case management and other services, including Payee Services at the Portage County office and Senior Housing Assistance at the Stark County office.

“Next Step” Ministries: This program is geared toward helping people take the “next step” toward a more stable and self-sustaining life. Services include Project Assisi, which offers case management, short-term financial assistance, resources and referrals to help qualifying individuals and families achieve long-term financial stability, and Steps to Opportunity, a pilot program offered at the Portage County location, providing childcare assistance for parents who want to return to work.
