We are now in the second phase of the Eucharistic Revival, the “parish year,” which is intended to bring the revival into our parishes and small faith communities. The following resources can be used during this phase to increase understanding of the Eucharist and what it means to us as Church:
Becoming Eucharistic People: The Hope and Promise of Parish Life, by Timothy P. O’Malley: In Becoming Eucharistic People, theologian Timothy P. O’Malley, also the author of Real Presence, outlines four essential dimensions of a Eucharistic culture in a parish—one that fosters reverence and unity among the faithful, includes every dimension of human life in the mystery of Christ’s Body and Blood and invites people back to parish life or to become Catholic for the first time. Written in an accessible style, it is the Diocese of Youngstown’s initial primary resource for small faith groups during the parish year.
Take, Bless, Break, Share: A Strategy for a Eucharistic Revival, by Cardinal Blase J. Cupich: Reviving and enlivening our encounter with the person of Jesus is a lifelong journey. In this book, Cardinal Blase Cupich proposes five strategies to help Catholics deepen this encounter through a profound experience of the Eucharist—one that leads to living rich, faith-filled lives. This book is perfect for parish-wide and small group sharing, featuring thoughtful questions for reflection and conversation.
The Eucharist in Scripture, by Clifford M. Yeary: The Eucharist in Scripture explores the biblical theme of meals shared in faithful fellowship and in covenant relationship with God. Old Testament meals and promises provide a foundation for gospel meals with Jesus, culminating in the Last Supper, as it is understood throughout the New Testament. This book includes a DVD and study guide.
To borrow these or other resources, the diocesan library and Office of Faith Formation and Lay Ecclesial Ministry are open for in-person visits and consultations 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. You may also visit the library online. Once you make your selections, you can email the request to mhynes@youngstowndiocese.org.
